Holstered Guns

It was all over the news the other day, when a man saw another man entering a Walmart with a gun concealed under his jacket.  The first man, fearing a mass shooting in the Walmart, tackled the armed individual and held him for the Police.  Unfortunately for the first man, he had tackled a legally licensed Concealed Carry License holder and was arrested for assault.

Walmart Attack

In another less publicized incident, a woman wrote an article about what she experienced in a local bookstore when she noticed a man with a “bulge” under his jacket.  She never saw a gun, just the bulge, but it threw her into such a state of panic that she eventually left the store.  Before she left the store, she circled the man several times as inconspicuously as possible hoping to see a badge.  If it turned out to be a cop, then “guy with a gun” is no big deal.  She never saw a badge, so she left the store and in her mind, avoided being a victim.

Woman Panics at Sight of Man’s Bulge

I can’t help the Bookstore lady, she never saw the gun, but for the Walmart vigilante and others who get concerned when then see a concealed weapon in public, here’s a clue.  If the gun is in a holster, it’s probably being legally carried.  In real life, I have never, ever seen or heard of a bad guy carrying a gun in a holster.  Why?  If a bad guy with a gun is about to be caught, he ditches the gun.  Doesn’t do much good to ditch the gun if the police catch up with him and he has an empty holster on his belt.  Besides, it’s cooler (I assume) to just stick the gun in your waistband, gangster style.  So next time you see someone with a concealed gun, remember:   If it’s a holstered gun, you don’t have to run.
