Ten Round Magazines

A few days ago, Thursday, November 19th, 2015, a law went into effect in Los Angles, California (People’s Republic of Kalifornia).   This law, actually an ordinance, makes possession of any firearm magazine that holds over ten rounds of ammunition illegal.  At the stroke of midnight on the 18th, thousands of Los Angeles citizens became criminals.  San Francisco and Sunnyvale California already have similar bans in place.

The Actual Ordinance

As always, there are plenty of exceptions to the law for the right people.  Police and all armed government agencies can still use as large a magazine as they can fit in their gun. You don’t need a large capacity magazine for your self-defense, but the police do?  After reading the FBI report that police miss between 70 and 80 percent of the shots fired during a shooting incident, maybe they do need larger capacity magazines.

And we can’t have the Mayor of Los Angeles being guarded by security with guns limited to ten rounds.  Armored car guards that guard your money can use large capacity magazines, but you can’t use one to protect your family.  And I bet all of the movie stars that are against private gun ownership won’t have a problem getting a waiver for their security details.

The future criminal possessors of magazines exceeding ten rounds had three choices to comply with the new law.

  • Destroy them.
  • Turn them into the LAPD.
  • Sell them to gun owners outside the city or State.

Can you imagine destroying magazines that cost anywhere from $30-$45 each?  My CZ-75B magazines cost $32-$38 each and I have more than one.  Many more.

Turn them into the police?  Yeah, right!  You’ll probably end up on the list of “crazy gun fanatics”.  You really think all of those turned in magazines will end up in the metal shredder?  Or will they end up in some cop’s private collection?  The LAPD could probably buy a few more Urban Assault Vehicles by selling the turned-in magazines on the internet in States that haven’t bought into this stupidity.

And why are they allowing the magazines to be sold out of city or State.  If these things are so evil, why are they allowing this device of mass murder to be exported to other unsuspecting areas?

The oddest thing to me is this law won’t stop guns from being used in crimes.  It will supposedly, reduces the number of deaths in a mass shooting.  Really?  The Columbine School shooters used illegally obtained, Hi-Point 9mm carbines that come with a ten round magazine.  Magazine size doesn’t matter when you are in a gun free zone.  With no armed opposition, you have plenty of time to reload.

An article I read about this law going into effect ended with the question, “If you lived in Los Angeles, what would you do with your “illegal” magazines?  My thought was option D, none of the above.  It got me to thinking, where would I hide my magazines?  In the attic under the insulation?  In the garage under some miscellaneous junk?   Buried in the back yard?  (Mental note, buy some Magpul polymer 30 round AR15 magazines.  They will be harder to find with a metal detector when Magazine Enforcement Police break down the door).

When I visualized myself crawling around in the attic to hide magazines, it made me think of the Jews in Nazi Germany hiding their valuables from the Gestapo.   Is this what we’ve become?
